MOVING
TO NANAIMO AND VANCOUVER ISLAND
Our
travels have taken us around the world and we can honestly
say that Nanaimo is one of the best
places we have ever been to. We fell in love with the great
natural amenities of Central Vancouver Island, close proximity
to Vancouver and Victoria, the mild west coast weather and
the warm, vibrant community that Nanaimo is. We know you will
too!
We're
not the only ones to feel this way! Did
you know, Travel + Leisure Magazine (with a readership
of over 5 million people per month!) consistenly names Vancouver
Island as North America's Top Island Destination! Their readership
survey identified us as the 3rd Best Island Destination in
The World! Their readers loved our friendliness, towering mountains,
cedar forests and ocean environment. Biking, kayaking, whale
watching and driving are all must-dos. Nanaimo's laid back
vibe was much heralded! Vancouver
Island is keeping great company! The Top Ten Island Destinations,
in order, are: Maui, Kauai, Vancouver Island, Great Barrier
Reef Island, Hawaii, Bali, Santorini, Sicily, Capri and Bora
Bora. Come, stay awhile and let us show you why we're the Best
Island Destination in North America!
The
Buccaneer Inn has been providing outstanding short term and extended
stay accommodation and service to new and prospective residents
of Nanaimo for over 40 years! Our newly renovated, spotlessly
clean, quiet and comfortable home-away-from-home suites and studios
are a great place to base your search from. The fully
equipped kitchens have all the amenities you need, at no
extra cost, including full size stoves and ovens (not a hot
plate!), microwaves, all utensils, pots and pans. The separate
bedroom provides you with extra room and privacy.
Many
of our guests spend a month or two with us prior to moving into
their newly purchased home. Our guests have found it very challenging
to find quality rental accommodation. In fact most of them have
found that it takes at least one full month to find the right
rental place.
As
for our rates, we're not the least expensive in town, but then
again, you're not looking for that. You're looking for
great accommodation that is spotlessly clean with full kitchens
and bedrooms at rates that are very attractive. We're the right
place and we offer outstanding accommodation
value!
Our central location in Nanaimo makes it convenient for you no
matter which part of the city you are looking to relocate to. We're
across from the ocean and offer great views of Newcastle Channel,
Departure Bay, Newcastle Island Provincial Park and the marinas
that dot the Channel. The Buccaneer is located in the Brechin
neighbourhood, 3 blocks away from Departure Bay Ferry Terminal,
yet we are central to all of the community. Within an 8 minute walk
of The Buccaneer are 12 restaurants and pubs. Terminal Park Shopping
Centre is 3 blocks away with a large Save-On-Foods store, government
liquor store, quick serve restaurants, gas station, hair cutters,
banks and insurance agencies.

Now
that you know that The Buccaneer Inn is the right place to
stay, why pick Nanaimo at all? Sure it's a great place,
but is the weather right and are there enough activities to keep
me busy?
The
weather is outstanding! In fact, why not checkout Nanaimo's
current weather right now!
Nanaimo
enjoys one of the mildest climates in Canada. We're protected
from Pacific weather systems by the range of mountains which
run the length of Vancouver Island. Our weather is also moderated
by the Straight of Georgia. In the summer months, the average
daily high temperature is 20C (about 70F). Even during the winter
months, Nanaimo's average daily temperature normally remains
above freezing. Our great climate allows us to comfortably enjoy
outdoor pursuits all year long. We enjoy an average of 1811 hours
of bright sunshine a year. The city's location on the leeward
side of the Island Mountain Range results in only a moderate
amount of precipitation.
Nanaimo
recently tied with Victoria as Canada's Most Comfy City according
to Environment Canada! The "Weather Winners" Highlights
Cities with the Most Comfortable Weather. The cities with the
most comfortable weather were determined by selecting 23 "comfortable" weather
categories, including the mildest winter, spring and fall;
the most sunshine; the latest winds and the lowest humidity.
Canada's West Coast is well known for its balmy climate, and
it is not surprising that Victoria and Nanaimo B.C. tied for
first place as the cities with the most comfortable weather
in Canada. Indeed, ten out of the top 14 most comfortable cities
are in British Columbia.

Nanaimo
is also home to the Nanaimo
Regional Hospital which provides services to the Central
Vancouver Island region. This full service hospital provides
all level of care and has attracted a holistic collection of
specialists. Most of your medical needs can be met here however
if you require services that are not available in Nanaimo, both
Victoria Regional and Vancouver General Hospitals are within
very close range.
We
have a myriad of activities to keep you occupied while you're
here. Our selection of Parks and Recreation activities is great.
Our new Aquatic and Leisure Centre boasts western Canada's
largest wave pool and a huge 48 person therapeutic pool. Beban
Park has an outstanding array of amenities including an all-weather
lawn bowling green, lighted tennis courts, Pitch and Putt golf
course, our community's second aquatic centre, 2 arenas and
lots of big sports fields. Bowen Park is our version of Stanley
Park in Vancouver. There are great wooded trails, a waterfall,
duck pond, tennis courts, Seniors Centre and lawn bowling.
There
are miles of great forest trails and oceanside beaches and
parks. One of our favourite places to go is Piper's Lagoon.
This park has it all; a great beach, small mountain to climb
and a lagoon to wander around! You can toss stones into the
ocean and then watch some climbers practicing their abseiling!
We
also like to go out to Cable Bay Trail in the winter to watch
the Sea Lions hang out on the log booms near Harmac Mill. These
great lumbering animals winter in our community and then spend
the summer in California and Mexico (they have the life don't
they!).
Buttertubs
Marsh, Westwood Lake (currently our most favourite park as it has a 6 km loop trail around the lake and is a great place for a relaxing walk, run or speed walking) and Morrel Sanctuary are some of our other
great parklands. For more on the great parks in Nanaimo, go
to the City of Nanaimo Parks
and Recreation site.
Nanaimo
has quite a few indoor attractions to keep you occupied. For
example, The Nanaimo
District Museum is
a great little place! They feature a new Coal Mining Exhibit,
restored steam locomotive, miners cabin and their own secret
little park with great views of the Boat Basin and the Harbour. The
Museum also operates The
Bastion. This Hudson Bay Company Fort was built in 1853
and is a very interesting piece of local history.
Nanaimo
is home to some great cultural events and venues. The Port
Theatre offers an extensive selection of plays, live music
and traveling acts. We have many other professional and amateur
theatrical companies including The
Nanaimo Theatre Group and TheatreOne!
Nanaimo's downtown core
is undergoing a major revitalization and has a large selection
of arts and culture venues to choose from. Lots of great second-hand
bookshops to leisurely flip pages in. Our new downtown library
offers free internet service, video library and more. The Old
City Quarter, just across the bridge from downtown, has an
eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. The perfect place to
sit and relax with a cup of coffee after picking out your new
used book.
In
addition to the cultural and shopping opportunities downtown,
Nanaimo is Central, Western and Northern Vancouver Island's regional
shopping destination. Nanaimo has 4 major shopping centres
with major national anchor tenants and lots of power centres
with smaller chain stores and local offerings:
